I am a Civil ,Environmental  and a Water Resources Engineer with a huge interest in entrepreneurship .I was researching the infrastructure industry in regards to starting a company, looking for a job, Innovation and Profitable happening field characterstics.

I wasn’t happy with the results .Here are some to share

  1. Too many people are after a very small amount of money
  2. It needs very good political contacts
  3. The research and productivity is so dynamic that people are generating too many products than the VC’s or reseach funding organisations can afford
  4. We cannot create another Apple or Microsoft as we are in the time a the bottom of  the entrepreneurial ecosystem
  5. Green Revolution is not even on the same page of industrial revolutions we had before which created and generated wealth

So chill out and store ideas for the right time …

  1. Mass transit scheduling : Developing software to get the optimal mass transit schedule can be very critical importance for running mass transit.Use swarm intelligence , ant colony optimization and advanced optimization algorthims to achieve this objective.ArcGIS Logistics module can accomplish that but using everyday tools and developing will be the key like .NET programs.

  2. Smart Grid/Control Systes : Advance algorthim controlled and tested software holds a great promise in utilizing the energy across a residence or facility .Canadian firm REGEN came up with a samrt grid controller which uses

  3. Energy Supply Chain :Servicing the utility companies to map their resources and optimizing the supply chain ,ArcGIS can be used but using a freely available program will help the industry or even small startups.

  4. Water Supply Chain :Water Supply Chain and Resource Planning isnot so profitable industry as the current supplier is the city /county etc . The best way to penetrate this market is being their client in consulting .

  5. Green Supply Chain : This field involves in creating the optimal best fit supply chain to reduce the carbon footprint of most light , medium and heavy industries .

  6. Decision Support Systems (using Game Theory ) : Business decisions , political decisions and any critical decisions can be made by applying game theory , fuzzy logic for case based scenarios, the software should be very user friendly.

  7. Green Building Certifications : The new wave of sustainable revolution will exapnd this field so a LEED certification will be good start and experience in industrial buildings will be more useful.

  8. Environmental Accounting /Environmental Impact Assesment : With clients like all major industries , facilities there could be a huge client base .So a C.F.A + LEED certification can be a start.

  9. Infrastructure Management : This business might depend on contacts however one deal breaker can change the situation .Serving the cities /communities of 5000- millions will be the best deals , lesser population than that would be a hole in the wallet.

  10. Asset Management : Asset management with EPA recommended free software will offer MS4 and other communities can be a huge market.

  11. GIS based services : Whole range of applications enables to create a spectrum of solutions starting from law enforcement , business analysis etc. Certification in GIS is a great investment.
